Immediately Roll Back FYUP! Give Honours in 3 Years for Present Batch!

We Are Proposing Alternative Paper Scheme of Honours in 3 Years Without Any Damage to the First Batch of FYUP Students!

It is Feasible and Workable! ACT NOW!

In the last few years our university has witnessed the most anti-student administration under the present Vice-Chancellor. AISA has always stood up against and exposed all the anti-student designs such as steady fee-hikes, shrinking of scholarships, hostels and other infrastructural facilities. Spaces for students’ activities been shut, and the entire university been barricaded. The biggest blow was the forceful implementation of Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) last year which aimed at dismantling the quality of honours education in this university and forcing the students from under-privileged to exit midway with incomplete education and degree.

AISA mobilised the university community against this programme and students openly claimed in our various feedback campaigns that FYUP has proved to be a disaster. Thousands of teachers and students participated in numerous protests since the day it was unilaterally implemented.  AISA organised a Students’ Referendum on FYUP on August 22, 2013, where out of 11,556 students 10,519 students (91.02%) voted against the FYUP. Yet the DU VC remains adamant to continue with his anti-student FYUP scheme.

Our Experience in the First Year of its implementation :-

  • Most non-honours papers are utter waste of time and energy. The burden of sub-standard foundation courses don’t allow us to concentrate on courses of the main discipline. These unwanted courses and lack of infrastructure forcing us to stay in college till 5 pm.
  • The ‘multiple exits’ options are nothing but attempts to cover-up ‘dropouts’. If we move out after second year with a ‘DIPLOMA’ degree, it will be a diploma in which subject? Will it not be treated as essentially a ‘drop-out’ degree in the job market?
  • The Fourth year is also an extra financial burden of nearly 2 lakh rupees which most of us cannot bear. The FYUP enhances existing inequality of our society as hard working students from underprivileged sections, being burdened with useless courses, will be forced to drop-out in between with ‘drop-out’ degrees.
  • In spite of having spent both time and money on an extra year, the students will have less knowledge of their core discipline than earlier students who had acquired an Honours Degree in three years.

It is now clear that if FYUP is allowed to stay and spread then it will completely ruin the higher education system of our country. And no country can build a secure future without securing the quality of its universities and the future of its students. As thousands of students took to streets demanding the withdrawal of FYUP since last year, the then opposition party BJP was forced to promise its swift withdrawal in its electoral promises. Now that they have formed the government we demand that they urgently fulfil their promise.

WE also emphasise that the govt must ACT without delay, before the coming admission.

If acted now, we can still salvage the situation, WITHOUT causing any harm to the First Batch of FYUP students who took admission last year in different Honours programme under FYUP. Students and teachers have proposed long back the ALTERNATIVE scheme of papers, so that first batch of FYUP students can still get their HONOURS Degree in 3 Years. This is a feasible and workable scheme if NO FURTHER time is wasted. See Overleaf for the alternative scheme of Honours for the present Batch in 3 Years.

Honours in 3 Years for the Present Batch is still Possible

THE CURRENT 4 YEAR PROGRAMME:

Sem 1 4 FC 2 DC 1 1 IMBH
Sem 2 4 FC 2 DC 1 1 IMBH

TO GRADUATE WITH HONOURS IN 3 YEARS:ALTERNATIVE STRUCTURE FOR THE BATCH 0F 2013

Sem  1 (Jul ’13 – Dec ’13)

3 Foundation Courses +

  1 Lang

2 Discipline I Courses 1 IMBH
Sem 2 (Jan ’14 – May ’14) 4 Foundation Courses 2 Discipline I Courses 1 IMBH
Sem 3 (Jul ’14 – Dec ’14) 0 Foundation Courses 4 Discipline I Courses 2 Discipline II Course 0 Cultural Activity
Sem 4 (Jan ’15 – May ’15) 0 Foundation Courses 4 Discipline I Courses 2 Discipline II Course 0 Cultural Activity
Sem 5 (Jul ’15 – Dec ’15) 3 Discipline I Courses+ 1 Research 1 Discipline II Course 0 Application Course 0 Cultural Activity
Sem 6 (Jan ’16 – May ’16) 3 Discipline I Courses+ 1 Research 1 Discipline II Course 0 Application Course 0 Cultural Activity
TOTAL 7 FC + 1 Lang

18 Discipline I Courses+

2 Research

6 Discipline II Courses   2 IMBH

The above Table clearly shows that if a student is allowed to NOT study the remaining 4 FCs, 4 Applied Courses, 6 Cultural Activity papers and 4 out of 6 DC II  in our second and third year we shall get rid of  the 14 non-honours courses. In these 14 slots one can easily study those 6 DC1 + 2 Research (main honours) papers which are forced currently in the fourth year. Thus the current batch can finish their Graduation with an Honours degree in May 2016.

  1. What about students who have taken up B.S instead of B.Tech thinking that the course is for four years? Also, wouldn’t it be tough for these students to get admission in foreign universities( especially the ones in U.S) with a 3-year bachelors degree?
