Demanding immediate action against the Casteist-Communal Fascist Brigade Who Unleashed Murderous Attack on Sanjay Kumar
Close on the heels of a failed assassination bid on former JNU student Umar Khalid in the heart of Delhi, another former JNU student, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, currently a faculty at Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Motihari, was the target of a murderous mob assault. On 17 August, Sanjay Kumar was attacked in his residence and brutally beaten up in broad daylight by a large group of hooligans with a clear intent to kill him. The immediate pretext for this murderous assault was a Facebook post by Sanjay apparently critical of Atal Behari Vajpayee. Sanjay has been in hospital since then, in a serious condition.
Sanjay along with other teachers had been protesting against the Vice Chancellor’s policies since the end of May. At the Mahatma Gandhi Central University, faculty members and teachers association have been protesting against the VC for his numerous irregularities by has been indulging including serious scuttling of legally mandated reservations in non-teaching posts. The VC has also been using his position of power to intimidate and harass any dissenting voice. He even tried to terminate the appointment of two teachers – this plan was stopped after spirited protests in the University. The VC also refuses to recognize the Mahatma Gandhi Central University Teachers Association, which was formed recently.
It is utterly shameful (though no longer shocking) that such a state of affairs can exist in a Central University. All this – blatant scuttling of reservations, non-recognition of a Union, and the daylight murderous assault on a teacher – is happening under the careful watch of both the Central Government and the JD(U)-BJP Bihar government led by ‘sushasan babu’ Nitish Kumar! AISA strongly condemns this murderous assault on Sanjay and demands speedy justice. Left and progressive forces are protesting all over Bihar, demanding justice for Sanjay. They are also trying their best to ensure his proper treatment. Sanjay was targeted and attacked by the right wing organised mob due to his opinions on the current regime and the malpractices of the VC. Indeed, this is not be seen as an isolated incident but a part of the systematic vilification of JNU unleashed by the RSS-BJP-ABVP and its ‘godi’ media. It is extremely telling that in spite of Dr. Sanjay mentioning names of and identifying several of his attackers in the complaint, there is visible reluctance on the part of the Bihar police and the administration to act. In view of JDU-BJP govt’s callous inaction against murderous mob violence and complete disregard for freedom of speech it is urgent to raise our voice and mobilisation for speedy justice.
